Dear Care Hero

I’d like to personally thank you for all that you have done, and continue to do, to protect and keep
our vulnerable residents across Herefordshire safe. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented new
challenges and your dedication and professionalism has been outstanding.

As we head into winter, we will need to continue to work together to protect Herefordshire’s most
vulnerable residents. You will have seen that COVID-19 rates are on the increase again- particularly
in staff within care homes. I know that you will be making sacrifices in your daily life to ensure that
your family, as well as your residents, are protected. Through the local outbreak control hub, we
have found that increases in cases are often linked to more informal environments, such as staff
rooms, after-work drinks and other social events. Many people did not even realise they had
COVID-19. Please be aware of social situations which can put you, or your close family, in contact
with someone with COVID-19, which can then be inadvertently passed on to more vulnerable
residents. I’d like to ask you if there is anything more you might be able to do help us ensure we
protect our most vulnerable residents and limit the spread of this deadly virus.

I understand how hard dealing with COVID-19 is, and this winter will be very challenging for our
whole community. If you have questions or concerns, I will be hosting a live Question & Answer
session specifically for care staff, details below:

There is more information about this at www.herefordshire.gov.uk/careheroes Finally, another reminder that if you develop a fever, persistent dry cough, or have a loss or change in your sense of taste or smell, you should self-isolate immediately and arrange a test. The government have just announced funding to help care staff receive pay while self-isolating due to COVID-19- please talk to your manager about this.

Thank you again for all of your hard work and commitment.

Stay safe Herefordshire,

Karen Wright
Director of Public Health
